Beauty in the mundane is what inspires me. I aim to capture a mood, feeling, or time of day. I seek peaceful moments, and try to capture life’s simple pleasures using my pastels. The tactile quality of working with pastel is especially appealing to me. I approach my work much like creating a painting. Using sanded papers, I begin by layering with broad shapes of tone and color, building my pastels from dark to light. There is a play that develops between using loose bold strokes and the select, deliberate marks of a drawing that I find very pleasing. Milton Avery, Mary Cassat, Andrew Wyeth and Wolf Kahn are among the many artists who have influenced my work.
